1 Introduction The universal genetic code defines the 20 standard proteinogenic amino acids (pAAs) and their ribosomal translation in response to their encoding trinucleotide sequences (codons). Despite the seemingly restricted number of pAAs and associated functional groups, the combinatorial possibilities are astronomical, which is reflected by the structural and functional diversity of the natural proteome.

AbstractDirected evolution of computationally designed enzymes has provided new insights into the emergence of sophisticated catalytic sites in proteins.
