Editor’s Note: Article originally published August 7, 2019. Illustration by Sierra Rozario. Hat Island, or Gedney Island (it’s the same place, known by two names) is the nearest floating landmass that you can see across Port Gardner from the shores of Everett. Today it’s privately owned. They lived a life of quiet material comfort and respectability. The hotel was destroyed in the 1960s when it was claimed under imminent domain with the construction of Interstate Five. Today a freeway covers their hotel, and a bike trail covers their heirloom sword. In the long run, history gets paved over, realigned, re-mapped out.
