'Burn the place down' rioter jailed for five years

A man has been jailed for five years and seven months for encouraging people to set fire to a hotel during rioting in Staffordshire. Mitchell Cleaver, 25, from Burton-upon-Trent sent messages to a number of people prior to the unrest, urging them to "burn the place down" and "make it the maddest night in Tamworth history", according to Staffordshire Police. Cleaver pleaded guilty to riot in September at Stafford Crown Court.

A mum from Staffordshire has thanked the medical team who saved her and her baby daughter's lives after she went into cardiac arrest while 37 weeks pregnant. Natasha's heart stopped for a total of 14 minutes after she collapsed in A&E at the Royal Stoke hospital in December - after experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pains and a persistent cough. A 30-strong team had to do CPR on her, and also carry out a Caesarean section to help her give birth at the same time.

'Horror' after man killed by tree falling on car

Members of a community have spoken of their shock after a man in Birmingham was killed when a tree fell on the car he was driving. Emergency services were called to Sutton Road in Erdington at about 15:00 GMT on Saturday, after 60mph (97kmh) winds brought down hundreds of trees across the West Midlands. Police - who have not named the man - said they had referred the case to the coroner.
Events scaled back and roads shut as storm hits

Severe weather conditions have caused disruption across the region, with a number of events cancelled or scaled back. Among them is Trentham Gardens, in Staffordshire, which posted that their gardens and woodland walks would be shut on Saturday. Stone Farmer's Market was cancelled for Saturday, but traders said they were still hoping to continue with the Christmas market on Sunday.
