The latest in a series of important reports on social mobility by the research group Opportunity Insights is out, and it’s another conversation-changer. Across a variety of outcomes in adulthood and adolescence, the gap between black Americans who grew up with low-income parents and their white counterparts has narrowed over time. This news is certainly welcome, but don’t pop those champagne bottles too quickly.

When feminist scholars cite a “gendered injustice,” it was once a safe bet that they would be referring to inequities disfavoring girls or women. No longer. The feminist philosopher Cordelia Fine, for example, now uses the term to describe the wide gaps in U.S. education where, as a group, boys and men are lagging behind their female peers (Fine, 2023).

It is no secret that boys and men are lagging girls and women in schools and colleges. In the average school district, boys are now about a grade level behind girls in literacy. There is a bigger gender gap in college degrees today than in 1972 when Title IX was passed—but it is the other way around. Boys from lower-income backgrounds, and Black boys and men, face the biggest educational challenges.

Why Washington State should create a Commission on Boys and Men

Lawmakers in Washington State may be about to lead the nation by establishing a bipartisan Commission on Boys and Men. The Commission would be the first of its kind in the U.S. Its creation would demonstrate that politicians, or at least, politicians in Olympia, are able to move beyond the zero-sum thinking that is distorting the debate over gender issues. The new Commission on Boys and Men would complement the state’s Women’s Commission, established in 2018.

Sometimes an unorthodox idea becomes commonplace. Take the recent proposal for a minister for men from Conservative MP Nick Fletcher. Just a few years ago, this would have been dismissed out of hand. At best, it would have been fodder for a few jokes at the MP’s expense. (In fact that’s what happened when Ben Bradley MP made a similar proposal in 2020.)What a difference a few years can make. Now it is being taken seriously.
