Melinda French Gates announced today (May 28th) a series of investments in gender equality, focused on women’s empowerment. Her focus is not a surprise, given her long-standing global leadership on this issue. As part of this new effort, French Gates has created some dedicated grantmaking funds.

Lawmakers in Washington State may be about to lead the nation by establishing a bipartisan Commission on Boys and Men. The Commission would be the first of its kind in the U.S. Its creation would demonstrate that politicians, or at least, politicians in Olympia, are able to move beyond the zero-sum thinking that is distorting the debate over gender issues. The new Commission on Boys and Men would complement the state’s Women’s Commission, established in 2018.

I’ve been out and about a lot in recent weeks talking to policymakers at all levels, from individual schools and universities, state legislators, national politicians and international bodies including, just last week, the OECD. My message to them has been: many boys and men are struggling and you should do more about that. They should do more about it just because if people need help, the point of policy is to help them. But there is more at stake here.
