    One of Beatty’s most iconic and venerable businesses held a grand re-opening Friday, May 9. The Sourdough Saloon is back open under new owners Nick Houck and Marco LoPiccolo. The exact age of the saloon is open to debate, with some claiming that the main building dates from the earliest days of the Rhyolite boom, and others estimating that it might date from the 1940s. The original building has expanded over the years, including an outdoor dining area, but it retains a rustic Old West look.

    Beatty looked like the off-road capital of the world April 25 and 26, as the town filled with 4x4s and ATVs for the Bighorn Outback Explorers Annual Poker Run. At the April 28 Beatty Town Advisory Board meeting, BOE president Debbie Baker said that this year’s event was an “outstanding success,” with 195 vehicles participating. A majority of participants came from Nevada, with Pahrump and Tonopah well-represented, but there were others from California and Utah.

    Beatty’s Cottonwood Park will attract more butterflies, bees and hummingbirds than ever thanks to this year’s Earth Day event held April 22. The Beatty General Improvement District partnered with the Nature Conservancy and the Southern Nye County Conservation District to plant a variety of native plants that attract pollenators. It was an expansion of the pollenator patch started last year in the northwest corner of the park.
