The research environment is highly competitive. For example, success rates for National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) research fellowship investigator grants in 2023 were 14.3%, with just 216 funded of the 1509 applications submitted.1 The good news is that a greater number of grants get awarded at the early career (EL1) level, albeit these have a smaller budget awarded as part of the research support package.
