On Monday 30 September 2024 at 3.10pm, a 500-megawatt (MW) turbo-alternator at Uniper Energy’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire commenced a staged 25-minute run down, reducing the electricity it was exporting to the grid from 480MW to zero. At 3.35pm it was desynchronised for the final time, marking the end of electricity produced from coal in Great Britain after 142 years.

McDonald’s latest menu has dropped as it switches things up for October. From yesterday (Wednesday, October 18), seven brand new items will be on the Maccies menu, including two new burgers – the McCrispy BBQ Smokehouse and the Philly Cheese Stack. The McCrispy BBQ Smokehouse is made up of 100 per cent chicken breast fillet in a crispy, crunchy coating with a smoky BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, red onion, lettuce, all in a delicious sourdough style sesame topped bun.

Two people have been shot dead in central Brussels. The two victims were both wearing Swedish football shirts, reports Sky News, ahead of the nation’s Euro qualifier match against Belgium this evening. The shooting took place near Saincteletteplein according to Het Laatste, a Dutch-language newspaper based in Antwerp. At the time of writing the suspect is reportedly at large.
