BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield plans to increase the water usage rate by more than 50% over the next five years and the sewer usage rate by up to 300%. The change proposed by the City Council Water Board affects more than 165,000 people. The current sewer rate comes out to $239 a year, or $19.92 per month. The proposed rate goes to $950 a year, or $79.17 a month over the next five years. The first price hike starts July 1, 2025.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Valley Fever Walk kicked off on Saturday to raise awareness about valley fever, a fungal disease that killed 49 people in Kern County last year. The event started at 9 a.m. on April 12 at Beach Park. Community members participated to raise awareness about the disease that anyone could get, including house pets.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Hundreds of students with special needs are having a ball at Garces High School during Garces Play Day, where the main lesson is to be a kid. More than 300 special needs students from preschool through 3rd grade were paired with high school buddies on Friday. Garces sophomore Dylan Bell shared his love of baseball with his little buddy Andre. “It’s all about giving back to the community on like stuff we never got to do,” said Bell.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — In 2024, 49 people died from Valley Fever, and 3,990 were infected with the fungal disease. Now, the county public health department has launched a new campaign to put a dent in those numbers by putting a face to the numbers. Kern County Public Health Director Brynn Carrigan is one of those faces. “This is the first time that I stand and address a public health threat that I have experienced myself,” said Carrigan.

Some cheered on the runners, and others ran for those who couldn’t. “Last year after the event they had a drone dip down, and do a tour of the route, and I remember looking at it, and I’m like, “I can’t run. I can’t do anything. I want to do that,” Alison McGhee, who ran the half-marathon, said. McGhee is a respiratory manager by day at Memorial Hospital.
