This Saturday, she and a lineup of comedians will continue that very personal work when they perform at the El Rey Theatre in Mid-Wilshire. Ticket sales and sponsorships will benefit Phoenix House California, an organization that offers treatment and prevention services to thousands of Southern Californians. “It’s the least we can do for all the damage we’ve done in the world,” Cho joked.

Kaiser Permanente mental health workers who had been on strike for months voted this week to ratify a new four-year contract, an agreement that is expected to bring the workers higher wages, better benefits and dedicated work hours outside of patient care. Most of the roughly 2,400 therapists, psychologists and social workers in Southern California had been on strike since October. They are scheduled to return to work this week.

The backstory: Kaiser Permanente therapists, psychologists and social workers have been picketing in California since October. They asked for better pay and retirement benefits, as well as more time to handle patient care outside of appointments. Several demonstrators were arrested during a February protest in front of Kaiser’s Hollywood medical center, and eight mental health care workers participated in a five-day hunger strike.

The Los Angeles County Probation Department on Friday submitted a proposed plan to move dozens of young people out of the troubled Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey in keeping with a state finding that it is unsuitable to house youths. By filing the plan with the Superior Court, the county has met a deadline set by Judge Miguel Espinoza.

Los Angeles County’s overall jail population has increased nearly 4% since late last year, in part because of more arrests related to a voter-approved proposition that allowed police to once again arrest people accused of certain low-level drug and theft crimes. It’s a relatively small increase — roughly 500 incarcerated people — but it could indicate what is to come now that Proposition 36 is California law.
