A local specialized sawmill is racing against the clock to save lumber from Altadena trees that had to be cut down after January’s Eaton Fire. Angel City Lumber and a group of volunteers have been working for months to find a space where the wood from damaged Altadena trees can be stored, milled and later repurposed for non-structural rebuilding applications, such as flooring and molding. They want to keep the wood in a new “community log bank” residents can pull from.

The severe toxic algae bloom that sickened or killed hundreds of marine animals in Los Angeles County — including sea lions and dolphins — appears to be subsiding. That’s according to the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, which is reporting that there have been no new patients over the past week or so showing signs of domoic acid toxicosis. The acid occurs naturally in some types of algae and is a dangerous neurotoxin that can make animals very sick and sometimes more aggressive.

What happened? According to documents available on the L.A. County Department of Public Health website, "Bay Cities Italian Market" was closed on May 21. There was no reason given for the closure, although the Public Health document notes a “major” violation of the “no rodents, insects, birds, or animals” category. The records show that "Bay Cities Importing, Inc." — also located at 1517 Lincoln Blvd.

After a judge approved a plan earlier this month to begin clearing out the troubled Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, the Los Angeles County Probation Department says it has begun the process of transferring incarcerated young people between camps to prepare for the transition.
