Christian Lundgaard wasn't thrilled to finish 11th in NTT IndyCar series points in 2024. But he's off to a solid start here in 2025 after making the podium with a third-place finish at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday. "I was very vocal in the offseason that I wanted to get off to a strong start with Arrow McLaren and I think we've clearly done that," he said.

Grand Prix of Long Beach: Kirkwood wins pole, looks for repeat of 2023

LONG BEACH - Kyle Kirkwood won pole position for the 2023 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, then won his first NTT IndyCar race the next day. History might repeat itself. Kirkwood on Saturday won the pole for Sunday's 50th running of the race with a top time of 1:06.1921 in qualifying. Andretti Global teammate Colton Herta was second with a fast lap of 1:06.4232. Herta, of Santa Clarita, won this race in 2021.

LONG BEACH - Will Power had the fastest NTT IndyCar practice time Friday. Penske teammate Jose Newgarden was sixth. However, neither qualified well Saturday at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach after being eliminated in the first round of knockout qualifying. There are two qualifying groups. The top six in each of the first two rounds advance to the top 12, then it goes to the Fast Six, which battle for pole position. Power was seventh in the first round, Newgarden was eighth.

This weekend I'll be reporting on my 15th Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, which will be running for an incredible 50th time. I've been an NBA writer, an MLB beat writer, an NHL beat writer as well as a 25-year boxing columnist. Yet this is my all-time favorite event. I have found it fascinating. A real gas. As have the competitors. I've spoken to many over the years and to a driver, they've all said this event is the NTT IndyCar series' No. 2 crown jewel behind the Indianapolis 500.
