I spent a lovely Friday evening this summer on a friend’s terrace in northern Israel drinking cardamom-scented coffee a few kilometers from the Lebanese border. With the sun low on the horizon and a Mediterranean breeze blowing in from the west, the scene was idyllic. Except, that is, for the Iranian missiles falling from the sky and the Israeli rockets flying up to stop them. It was a surreal moment.

Vexed by the apocalyptic vibes of the last few months, I recently went back and re-read the controversial book Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order by Harvard political science professor Samuel Huntington. The book was controversial when it came out in the mid-nineties because Huntington, in a moment of post-Soviet euphoria, dared to doubt the universality of mankind and instead highlighted the enduring rifts that separate us. Three decades on, it’s uncanny how much he got right.

We cannot know where the war will end that started last October between Israel and Iran’s terror proxy, Hamas. But the next theater is certain to be southern Lebanon, the stronghold of Iran’s older and more lethal ally, Hezbollah. Israel has responded to the killing of 12 Druze children in the Golan Heights, but not with a major military escalation. Tensions could yet spark a broader, bloodier regional war.
