BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The story on Donna Avenue, in central Bakersfield, is this: a house mostly intact, a family alive and grateful, a frightened dog reassured, and a Bakersfield Driller hailed as a hero. It was Monday night, around 10:30 p.m., when a series of fires broke out in the alley behind David Stewart’s house on Donna Avenue. The family safely scrambled out the front door, but Stewart went back inside to grab some things.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – It was almost 11 p.m. on Monday night, and David Stewart’s family – his father, sister, nieces and nephews – were at their home on Donna Avenue in central Bakersfield, about to go to bed. Then a niece raced into the living room – the backyard, she screamed, was on fire. Again. They scrambled out the front door. Stewart ran back inside to gather mementos – possessions that had belonged to his late mother. Then he escaped a second time.
