    CASTLE ROCK • It’s probably not something most people have given much thought to, but it is possible for a hamburger to be much more than a beef patty in a bun. Crave Real Burgers proves it with an exclamation point. Talk about inventive toppings and combinations — Crave has this down to a culinary science. It felt like if we could dream it, they could make it. However, we relied on the menu offerings, many of which were unlike any before seen.

    The welcoming aroma of freshly baked goods when entering La Concha Bakery and Coffee is only the beginning of what proved to be a positive dining experience. Admittedly, when I think of bakeries, it’s all about the sweets, but La Concha has several well-prepared sandwiches that demonstrate a quality kitchen can do it all.

    The name suggests a friendly environment, but the kind reception we received at 105 Social House in Palmer Lake was, nonetheless, surprising. Staff, especially our server David, and even a few customers not only gave us a warm welcome, but boasted about the menu. Favorites included the cheeseburger, described as being “not like any cheeseburger you’ve ever had,” the beet salad, salmon, gnocchi and banana cream pie. At the last minute, the Mahi tacos also made the list.

    Sizzling sounds and enticing aromas account for positive first impressions about Kura Japanese Restaurant, but there’s much more to appreciate here than hibachi-prepared foods. The eatery is divided into two sections depending on whether you come for the hibachi show — after all, there’s an element of showmanship associated with the knife- and spatula-wielding chef — or if it’s more traditional Japanese fare you’re after. We went for the latter.

    A relative’s influence can never be underestimated and for Mabel Kim, it has been a driving force in much of what she has undertaken and accomplished. When Mabel was a young child, her grandmother, from South Korea, became a substitute maternal figure. Initially, it was difficult for the pair to communicate relying on broken English, limited Korean vocabulary and clumsy hand gestures. However, as Mabel’s Korean improved, she came to appreciate her grandmother’s strong will and loving personality.
