“This clean, green island has long been a rich place of abundance.” I couldn’t agree more – I come to Arran every year seeking my own sustenance, my own affirmation in this deeply special island. For me, with Scotland’s seventh largest island, it’s personal. One side of my family hails from the south of the island and I still have relatives in Shiskine. The majority of my childhood holidays were spent doon the watter and now I take my own children to revel in Arran’s charms too.

You still see the British cooked breakfast outlets and mass market "traditional" restaurants serving average fare in the resorts (especially Puerto del Carmen), but a slew of Lanzarote restaurants have also moved upmarket in other resorts, the island capital of Arrecife and in the hinterland. Island restaurateurs have responded to the desire to savour locally sourced produce, which Lanzarote offers in abundance - particularly seafood.

DESPITE having travelled to more than 100 countries as my time as a travel writer, the place I always return to is much closer to home. When I was a wee laddie we often hauled down to visit relatives in Galashiels. The 1980s weren’t that kind to Gala so my impressions of a Borders town were not entirely positive. My lovely Uncle Donald used to say if only they would bring the railway back from Edinburgh ... Well, in 2015, trains ran once again on the Borders Line, though sadly my uncle never lived to see them breathe new life into Gala.

Big on history, architecture and - latterly - fine food, this often overlooked city is ideal for a budget weekend awayWriter Graham Greene once hailed Riga the "Paris of the North" and it's an epithet that has never rung truer. The Latvian capital - with its bountiful museums and galleries - is bathed in culture and history, its streets a living museum of remarkable architecture, including some of Europe's most impressive Art Nouveau buildings.
