Museums. Famous galleries of art. On every bucket list they're not just 'should-sees', but 'must-sees' for the fascination, frisson or challenge to perceptions they can spark. In cities like Edinburgh there are many museums and galleries to see (and a lot of people seeing them), so to help avoid cultural indigestion, sore feet or selfie-rage, it helps to know what's out there.

This town on the mighty River Tweed swims in history far beyond the Romans (Image: Getty Images) While some towns in the Borders can feel a bit down at heel you cannot say the same for Melrose. This is the “You’ll have had your tea then?” of the Scotland’s border country, a trim market town as Morningside as it is Tweed Valley. Not in a bad way: this is a well-to-do oasis that proudly holds on to its heritage, its fiercely independent shops and, yes, its rugby.

The Hebrides over the millennia have witnessed the passing attentions of everyone from Roman galleons to Viking longships, but the most permanent marks, indeed scars, date back just to the 18th century when the baleful Highland Clearances descended on families who had lived here for generations. It was a mass enforced, systematic depopulation that savaged on until the 20th century, forging the Hebrides today.

Behind us, half a dozen Arctic terns mob a hulking sea eagle as the distant peaks of Skye complete an idyllic Hebridean scene. Welcome to family-run Hebrides Cruises and their life-affirming small-ship adventures around the world’s most spectacular archipelago. The Hebrides and I go back a long way. My love affair with this epic collage of innumerable islands goes back to childhood ferry rides and sailing trips with my late dad that seared these real life Treasure Islands into my heart and soul.

It's a tough choice: which glorious palm-fringed island, Barbados or St Lucia, to choose? They may be neighbours in the idyllic aquarium-clear waters of the Caribbean, but many people are surprised how dramatically different they are. One island soars with majestic mountains to the other's relatively flatter landscape, one is bathed firmly in a British colonial legacy, while the other flits between British, French and Creole influences.

Really dissapointing @JohnLewisRetail. You were meant to deliver laptop today through DPD. Slot 1700-1800. Waited in. Nothing. Got screenshot saying still out for delivery from DPD 2140. Then at 2200 DPD sent message to say I hadn’t been in. Terrible service.
