If the prayers of every New Orleans Pelicans' fan had been answered Monday night, Joe Dumars would have won the NBA draft lottery. With that victory would have come a no-brainer of a decision on what to do with the No. 1 overall pick: draft Duke sensation Cooper Flagg. Or at worst, if the ping pong balls would have just fallen the way the percentages said they would, the Pelicans would have had one of the next three picks.

The New Orleans Pelicans followed up a tough season with a tough NBA draft lottery Monday night in Chicago. The Pelicans finished the season with the fourth-worst record in the NBA and entered Monday night's lottery with a 12.5% chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick and the Cooper Flagg prize that comes with it. Instead, the Pelicans fell three spots and will have the No. 7 overall pick. The lowest they could have fallen was eighth.

The last time the New Orleans Pelicans made a change at executive vice president of basketball operations, they won the lottery. David Griffin, in his first month on the job in 2019, won the lottery and used the No. 1 overall pick to select a promising star from Duke: Zion Williamson. Will history repeat itself for Joe Dumars, who is now in charge after replacing the fired Griffin in April? The answer to that will be revealed Monday night in Chicago at the NBA draft lottery.
