Pickleball courts break ground at Veterans Park

For those who enjoy pickleball, work began this week on new, designated courts for one of the country’s most widely-played sports. The courts, at the Veterans Memorial Park, will take about 90 days to complete. “Pickleball continues to be a growing sport, and several Boulder City residents had expressed a desire for dedicated outdoor courts,” Parks and Recreation Director Julie Calloway said.
‘Comedy of Errors’ coming to Boulder City

William Shakespeare is coming to Boulder City. Well, sort of. The Nevada Shakespeare Festival, in conjunction with Main Street Boulder City, is bringing Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” to town on Friday, April 25 during a night that’s being dubbed Shakespeare Under the Stars. The free event begins at 6 p.m. at Bicentennial Park. Attendees are asked to bring a chair or blanket.
Remains of missing WWII pilot buried in Boulder City

The family of Lt. Robert D. McKee has finally had some closure regarding their loved one, albeit 80 years later. Last summer, McKee’s remains, found during an excavation project in Germany were identified and were returned. His remains were buried at the Southern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City last Friday. A special service and flyover took place that included members of his family, military personnel and guests.
BCHS, CCSD named in lawsuit after altercation

A parent has filed a lawsuit against both Boulder City High School and the Clark County School District, alleging that both were negligent in protecting her son from an altercation with other students two years ago. The lawsuit was filed on April 4 in Clark County District Court. It was filed by the firm of Bighorn Law on behalf of their client, Kalah Porter. The defendant is listed as the Clark County School District and Boulder City High School.

It’s been just more than two months since a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer and his wife shot a man, who they felt posed a direct threat to them and another woman. The shooting took place on Jan. 24 on the 700 block of Sixth Street. That investigation continues. “The off-duty officer and his wife were inside their residence when they heard a commotion coming from the backyard of a neighbor’s residence,” LVMPD Capt.

If someone is researching Boulder City’s history, chances are the majority of what they find will center around the building of Hoover Dam. It makes sense because after all, without the construction of the dam nearly 90 years ago, more than likely Clean, Green Boulder City would not exist. But there’s much more to the city’s past as shared during an event last Wednesday at the Clark County Museum in Henderson.
Car show benefiting officers returns to BC

If you like car shows, food, music and being able to see celebrities from your youth, then mark Saturday, March 29 on your calendar. The annual Injured Police Officers Fund classic car show is set to return to Boulder City and will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. Organizer Jay D’Angelo said everything is “coming along great” and that so far, they have about 200 cars signed up with another 50 or so expected. This will be the fifth year the show will be in Boulder City.
Public invited to PD’s 65th anniversary

It’s an anniversary 65 years in the making. On Thursday, March 27, the Friends of the Boulder City Police Department will be hosting a 65th anniversary gathering for the department. Following the incorporation of Boulder City in 1960, the doors of the police department soon opened to serve the growing community back then. The celebration will be held from 4-7 p.m. in front of the police department. Food and drink will be available for sale with proceeds supporting Friends of the BCPD.

It’s the call no parent wants to receive. Thirty-two years ago, Boulder City resident Carol Hanson was awakened in the middle of the night by a phone call stating that her son, Ben, had been involved in a head-on collision while driving home from work in Las Vegas. “Ben was driving home to Boulder City when a vehicle driving the wrong way with his lights off slammed into Ben,” she said.
Garrett STEM certified by governor’s office

It’s been three years in the making but all that hard work paid off this past week for Garrett Junior High. During a presentation in Carson City, Garrett was named as a Governor’s Designated STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) School. They are now just one of 48 junior highs and high schools in the state to hold that distinction. “I was teary-eyed to be honest,” Garrett Principal Melanie Teemant said when getting the word more than a month ago.
