    In 1972, hundreds of locals clambered to their seats at Armadillo World Headquarters for one thing only: Sunday night ballet. Stanley Hall, the British-born artistic advisor of Austin Ballet Theatre, watched on as guests settled in with overflowing baskets of nachos and ice-cold Lone Stars, the smell of marijuana drifting up to the lofted ceilings as the curtain rose. Surely, ’Dillo manager Eddie Wilson was holding his breath.

    At 10 p.m. on Feb. 27, 2001, troves of policemen clad in full riot gear stood shoulder to shoulder, circumnavigating the corner of Trinity and Sixth streets. Their target? A group of 50 women and drag queens huddled together in topless solidarity, with organizer Caroline Estes at the center of it all. A week before, Estes found herself arguing with the city’s police chief on the front steps of APD headquarters.

    In December 2012, Austin musician Samuel Grey Horse donned a Santa suit, straddled his spotted mule, and trotted west toward the bustling shops on South Congress Avenue for a holiday gig at a local boot store. The Mescalero Apache didn’t know much about the Western myth of jolly old Saint Nick—nor did he realize that night would inspire a lifelong calling. At the time, Grey Horse was recovering from a near-death horse racing accident that had left his body broken.

    When Lucille Ball’s private jet descended upon the Austin Municipal Airport in February 1965, hundreds of fans swarmed the tarmac, eager to get a glimpse of her copper-colored hair. Ball had been invited to Headliner’s Club Weekend—an annual event honoring Texas media and journalism—but her red-carpet entrance started the moment she deboarded: “It looked for a minute as if the city might just love Lucy to death,” wrote one reporter for The Statesman.
