Hardesty’s “Military and Personal Sketches of Ohio’s Rank and File from Sandusky County in the War of the Rebellion,” which is part of a wealth of Hardesty information, is available through the Rutherford B. Hayes Library and Museums in Fremont. Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia was a voluminous late 19th century encyclopedia produced by H.H. Hardesty and Co. of Chicago and Toledo.

Hayes was involved in the naming of the man who was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court by an historic Senate vote. The close vote wasn’t on Hayes’ nomination, but rather it came on a follow-up action by James Garfield. However, Hayes got the ball rolling, so to speak. Stanley Matthews had a strong friendship with Rutherford B.

If you have any doubts about how wild this area was 200 years ago, I have borrowed some tales from Basil Meek’s “Twentieth Century History of Sandusky County” to clear things up. John Linebaugh, a native of Amsterdam, Holland, who came to this area from Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1818 when he heard that this was a great place to fish, had this story to tell:Deer herds of 100 traveled the area“I have seen as many as 100 deer in a herd.

That total solar eclipse we’ve been eagerly awaiting is just days away. The eclipse will begin a few minutes before 2 p.m. Monday in both Fremont and Port Clinton. It is predicted to hit maximum effect at 3:13 and end at 4:27. Area expected to be crowded with eclipse fans MondayThere have been months of hype and millions of words of caution about looking at the sun leading up to the big day.
