Research ArticleIMMUNOLOGY INTRODUCTIONThe cytokine interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a danger-associated molecular pattern that alerts the immune system upon tissue stress or damage (1). Under homeostatic conditions, the inactive form of IL-33 is constitutively expressed in the nucleus of epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts, but environmental insult and tissue damage trigger the release of the “alarmin” into the surrounding tissue environment (1).
