Democrats and voting rights activists are excoriating a majority ruling from the North Carolina Court of Appeals Friday that takes a Republican judicial candidate one step closer to overturning the results of his contest. A two-judge majority on the appeals court panel has ruled that tens of thousands of voters who cast ballots in the November race must verify their eligibility to elections officials within 15 days, though the process for how they'll do that is unclear.

Republican Jefferson Griffin's bid to turn around an apparent electoral loss in his race for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court now rests with a panel of his fellow state appeals court judges. Griffin trails incumbent Democratic Justice Allison Riggs by 734 votes, a gap confirmed by two recounts. But he has protested more than 65,000 ballots over alleged irregularities and wants the election results recalculated minus the disputed votes.

Rep. Marcia Morey (D-Durham) recalled how she and her late colleague in the North Carolina General Assembly, Joe John (D-Wake), ended up in the state legislature in 2017. "We had both been judges and we were both elected in non-partisan races," Morey said. In John's honor, Morey has filed a bill this year that would return North Carolina to a nonpartisan, publicly funded format for electing judges.
