Hi Readers - Thanks to all of you who have read and shared How To Talk To Teens About "Adolescence."It’s the most popular article I’ve published in two years of writing this newsletter. Today, I wanted to share another take on the show, by Dr. Brendan Kwiatkowski-Hartman, a researcher and writer from Canada who I greatly admire. He originally posted this to his blog but gracefully agreed to let me share it here.

In my relatively new career as a therapist, I spend a lot of time around women. Most of my clients are men. But my colleagues and work friends tend to be women, as women make up an estimated two-thirds of therapists. One thing I’ve noticed compared to being around other men is that women tend to ask more questions. Not directly to me about my life or experience—though that seems to happen a bit more often too, maybe because they’re therapists? But out loud. Into the air.

Hi Readers! I know December can be a time that brings up a lot of emotions in adults and teens - I hope you are getting though it all ok, and finding space for joy, reflection, and connection. Maybe that time will involve reading a book or two? I hope so, because in addition to co-writing a book, I’ve been paying close attention to the books that were released this year. Here are seven selections that I think are especially wonderful.

I enjoyed the recent Bloomberg analysis of nine podcasters who are “mobilizing America’s men to lean right.” I also think it misses a point that is at least as important as the one it makes. Sex and the State is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The authors frame the piece as helping to explain why men, and especially young men, swung hard for Trump in the last election.

Before I’d even read the book, ’s NYT op-ed inspired me to write The New York Times is lowkey anti-gender. I wrote it (as I do many posts) in a fit of mild pique. I wanted Whippman to explicitly write “abolish gender.”Having read the book, I’m actually grateful she didn’t. I’ve long harped on many of the main points in Boymom: Reimagining Boyhood in the Age of Impossible Masculinity. I wrote about it most recently in Western masculinity as Chinese foot binding. (This is not a brag.

Good to be featured in this piece for @TheAtlantic about the “undernurture” of boys- something I write about in my book, Boymom.

The idea that boys should be raised to be “tough” is resurgent in American culture. But that attitude, @drjcoleman writes, conflicts with research showing that to thrive, boys really need more affectionate care: https://t.co/wsAWlaPhrO
