Chuck Davis, a philanthropist and investment executive who spent two years at Middlebury before transferring to the University of Vermont, will deliver the 2025 commencement address. A native of Burlington, Vermont, Davis worked for Goldman Sachs for 23 years before founding his own investment firm, Stone Point Capital, where he currently leads the group as chairman and co-executive chief officer, overseeing over $45 billion of assets.

Middlebury has planned its first-ever shelter-in-place drill for this Friday, Dec. 6 at 1:50 pm. Lasting 15 minutes, the exercise is meant to prepare community members for a variety of emergency situations on campus, including active shooter threats, hazardous waste spills, dangerous weather conditions, and other crises. Associate Vice President of Safety Demitria Kirby announced the drill in an email to the college community on Nov. 12, followed by another update on Nov. 21.

While only seven percent of Middlebury graduates go on to pursue careers in government, law and policy, those who do have a considerable influence on the direction of federal, state and local policymaking. Alumni of one of the college’s most popular departments lead Supreme Court confirmation battles, lobby legislators in Montpelier and run political campaigns in the tightest of battleground districts. Some are political junkies; others are avowedly apolitical.

The Middlebury Staff Council conducted a survey of all college employees from Jan. 15 to Feb. 12, 2024, receiving responses from 549 individuals, or 55% of staff members. The highest response rates were in Academics (which includes department coordinators and the Office of the Registrar) and Library/ITS.

As hundreds of students gathered on campus for a concert co-sponsored by the Middlebury College Activities Board (MCAB) last Friday, questions remain about the organization’s future on campus. In the wake of legislation passed by members of the previous Student Government Association (SGA) last spring, MCAB and the new SGA administration will continue to grapple with how to best allocate concert funding and improve the organization’s oversight this year.
