This article will update. Monument Circle was shut down Friday afternoon after Indianapolis police got into a standoff with an armed man carrying a "Free Haiti" flag. Just before 4 p.m., police got a report of a man firing a gun in Monument Circle. Officers who arrived confirmed the man was armed and requested SWAT officers for backup. Police quickly closed the streets around Monument Circle. The man was arrested after police fired a bean bag round at him.

After a months-long investigation, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced Wednesday that it had arrested seven people, some of whom were affiliated with a local branch of the Sureños gang, on several firearms and narcotics-related charges. The Sureños, also known as Sur 13, is a street gang that originated in Southern California before growing into a transnational gang closely tied to the Mexican Mafia, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

After a months-long battle in Marion County court, Henry and Minh Cheng will receive nearly $43,000 cash that was intercepted by police inspectors at Indianapolis' FedEx hub while en route to the couple in April. The couple's class-action lawsuit alleging an unconstitutional pattern of similar seizures remains pending. A process called civil forfeiture allows law enforcement to confiscate property from people suspected of criminal activity, even if they haven’t been accused of a specific offense.

The trial of two Indianapolis officers charged in the death of Herman Whitfield III continues Friday with closing arguments. Whitfield, a 39-year-old gifted pianist, died after police responded to a 911 call from his parents — Gladys Whitfield and Herman Whitfield Jr. — for a mental health emergency about 3:20 a.m. April 25, 2022. Five officers and one recruit trainee responded. Whitfield was shocked, handcuffed and restrained chest-down before falling unresponsive and losing a pulse.
