Chesapeake’s City Council received a rare standing ovation from a packed chamber Tuesday night after it voted unanimously to reject a proposed data center. “It was like Christmas again,” said Helen Messer, who lives in one of the houses that sits a few hundred feet from where the data center would have been. “I’ll sleep better than I have in a month.”The proposal from long-time Chesapeake developer Doug Fuller would have been the region’s first major data center.

When Australia and the United Kingdom signed a deal to buy nuclear submarines from the United States and have U.S. experts teach them to build their own, Hampton Roads officials saw doors opening. The deal, which would see Australia buy as many as five Virginia-class subs from the U.S. to help curb China’s expanding influence in the Pacific, could ultimately be worth more than $200 billion over the next couple of decades.

Cruise ships have been visiting Norfolk since the mid-90s. But for the first time in the city’s history, Norfolk started hosting year-round cruise service via Carnival. The milestone comes after Norfolk invested millions of dollars in the Half Moone Center, where around 3,700 passengers now embark and disembark from cruise ships every weekend.
