LINDA Gray should be daunted. She has a to-do list that could unfurl and wind its way around the near two acre site at Lea Gardens, her slice of gardening paradise in the heart of Tresta in Shetland’s West Mainland. There are paths to clear, weeds to pull up and fallen trees to be removed. And yet – just over a week before she welcomes an eager public back – Gray surveys her serene slice of paradise and says she could not have it any better.

A LERWICK bike library for some primary and secondary school age children is one of a number of active travel projects being proposed. Shared bike and walking paths in Aith, Swinister, from Lower Voe to Tagon and from Setter to Veester Hill are also among the schemes put forward by the council. Funding for the projects could come from Transport Scotland, with the SIC set to submit a grant request if the plans are approved by councillors at next Tuesday’s ZetTrans meeting.

A PROMISE to offer free ferry travel vouchers to everyone under the age of 22 in Shetland has been quietly rowed back by the Scottish Government. It was announced on Tuesday that the concessionary ferry vouchers would be extended to people aged between 19 and 21 from June, with 16-18 year olds already eligible. However Transport Scotland – the Scottish Government’s transport body – had announced in late 2023 the scheme would soon be rolled out to everyone under-22.

NO ACTION has been taken against Shetland Islands Council (SIC) after a data breach allowed Stuart Hill to access the names and addresses of 130 people in council tax debt. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) had been investigating the breach, which the council reported itself to the ICO, after Hill wrote to people who owed council tax in July 2024. However the ICO said “no formal action” had been taken against the council following the investigation.
