SHETLAND Islands Council (SIC) has been praised after a number of young people were recruited to fill roles on the inter-island ferry service. No agency staff are currently being hired to keep the ferries going, Wednesday’s harbour board meeting heard. That comes after a period of intense pressure on the ferry service, which saw temporary staff employed to keep them running and many working long hours.

NEITHER NHS Shetland or Lerwick Port Authority (LPA) were made aware of illness aboard the cruise ship Costa Favolosa before she arrived in Lerwick yesterday (Tuesday). Cruise operator Costa Cruises said in a statement to Shetland News on Tuesday night that its passengers had been cleared to disembark by “local health authorities”.

THE COUNCIL’S legal team are set to explore possible actions against a local fishing boat which “deliberately ignored” instructions at Sullom Voe harbour. The vessel failed to notify vessel traffic services at Sullom Voe that they would be leaving their berth on 24 April of this year, Wednesday’s harbour board meeting heard. An instruction not to depart the berth was then “deliberately ignored”, councillors were told.

THOUSANDS of passengers from a visiting cruise ship were left in Lerwick after a reported viral sickness bug onboard led to bus companies refusing to take them. A Lerwick shop owner and bus company director were left furious after people descended on the town before tour guides were told of people had taken ill onboard. POLITICAL hopefuls and local councillors have criticised a deal between the UK and EU which will give European fishing boats continued access to British waters. The 12-year deal will allow EU vessels to continue to fish around the UK, but the UK Government has hailed it as a deal which “protects Britain’s fishing access, fishing rights and fishing areas”.
