LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Maine's Cooper Flagg added to his long list of accolades on Thursday night, winning the Gatorade Male Player of the Year award at the ESPY Awards. The award, given to the best male high school athlete for a given school year, comes after the former Nokomis Warrior led Montverde Academy (Fla.) to a 30-0 season this past winter. Notable others to win the award include NBA stars LeBron James, Jayson Tatum and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Husson softball alum Kenzie Dore named 2024 NAC Woman of the Year

BANGOR - The NAC has named Husson softball alum and Brewer native Kenzie Dore as their 2024 Woman of the Year for outstanding, "academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership."Dore was a valedictorian of the class of 2024 with a 4.0 GPA, graduating with both her bachelor's and master's in criminal justice. She did all of this while leading the Eagles to a NAC Championship and taking courses with the University of Maine ROTC.

CAPE ELIZABETH - John Hayes of Purpoodock Club is the sole leader heading into the final round of the 105th Maine Amateur Championship at his home course. Hayes, who was tied for the lead with Brunswick's Eli Spaulding at -3, shot -4 on the day to pull ahead of Spaulding by two strokes. Tied for third are Michael Arsenault of Val Halla and Ronald Kelton of Purpoodock at even par. Nonesuch River's Peter Malia and Sanford's Benjamin Bell are tied for fifth at +3.
Cooper, Ace Flagg to host youth basketball camp at UMaine in August

ORONO - Before Cooper Flagg begins his career at Duke and Ace Flagg his senior year at Montverde Academy (Fla.), the two brothers are giving back to young basketball players in Maine with their own mini-camp. The Cooper and Ace Flagg Basketball Procamp will be held at the University of Maine on August 10th and 11th. The camp is for boys and girls grades one-six and will see the star duo and a number of local coaches teaching the youngsters fundamentals, giving lectures and more.

ORONO - On Wednesday, University of Maine softball officially introduced Kimberly Stiles as the seventh head coach in program history. "I'm just really excited," Stiles says. "I think this is an amazing opportunity and I am just really looking forward to what we can do here.""She's the hardest worker you're going to see," athletic director Jude Killy says. "She's the first at the field and last one to leave, plus a grinder when it comes to recruiting.

Purpoodock's John Hayes and Brunswick Golf Club's Eli Spaulding each finished their rounds -3, tied for the lead. Below them, tied for third, are Purpoodock's Ronald Kelton Jr. and Biddeford-Saco Country Club's Gregory Kalagias at -1. Four players are tied for fifth place at +1.
Maine softball hires 14-year veteran Kimberly Stiles as head coach

ORONO - 14-year coaching veteran Kimberly Stiles has been hired as Maine softball's new head coach, the university announcing in a statement Tuesday. Stiles, a former player at the University of Vermont and University of Pittsburgh, comes off a three-year stint as the head coach at Holy Cross University. There, she led the Crusaders to their best three-year stretch in 25 years. She has also been head coach at DII schools Davis and Elkins College and the University of Charleston.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Newport native Cooper Flagg is already projected to be the number one pick in next year's NBA Draft, and he is making his case clearer by the minute with Team USA at their pre-Olympics camp. As part of the USA Select Team, Flagg is sharing the court at camp with greats like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Steph Curry and more from the U.S. Olympic team to help prepare them for Paris later this month.

HAMPDEN - Jack Mason cranked three home runs, bringing in a total of five RBIs, to lead Old Town-Orono Twins Legion baseball over the Quirk Motor City Riverdogs 11-5 on Monday night. Mason's first two home runs, in the first and third innings, brought in the first two runs of the game and gave the Twins an 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Julian Duty and Owen Harper scored on a Daniel England RBI single to make it 4-0.
Courageous Steps Golf Scramble raises more than $12k for locals with disabilities

ORONO - The fourth annual Courageous Steps Golf Scramble at Penobscot Valley Country Club was a rousing success, raising more than $12,000 for local adolescents with disabilities. 18 teams were out on the links Monday to support the Courageous Steps Project. Founded in 2014, it aims to support those with disabilities through a Childhood Family Center in Milford, a scholarship fund, a back to school initiative and more.
