New highs for feeder steer and heifer prices in Saskatchewan were recorded last week, according to the Cattle Market Update for the week ending April 18. Prices were available in all steer categories except for the 900-plus pound steers and most of the heifers except for the 300-400 and 400-500 pound categories.

The Water Security Agency (WSA) is now accepting applications for its the Agricultural Water Management Fund. The Fund helps producers and municipal governments with water management projects “that support environmental stewardship and agricultural growth in Saskatchewan”, says a news release from the provincial government.

The last several days have not been kind to the stock markets, but so has this year. Adam Pukalo, a Commodities Futures Advisor with Ventum Financial, noted the markets have been in a downward trend since the beginning of the year. The S&P 500 is down about 14%, the T-S-X is down 7% to 8% per cent, and the NASDAQ is down over 20% in that timeframe, said Pukalo.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) was somewhat relieved Canada was not included on the list of countries affected by the U.S. reciprocal tariffs last week. However, President Keith Currie says they’re waiting on the impact other tariffs will have on the agriculture sector, such as the U.S. 25% levy on Canadian steel and aluminum. He says the steel & aluminum tariffs may affect farm equipment shipments and could increase the price of parts.

Collaboration between the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee and the community itself remains active on two projects that will pay tribute to the 2017-18 Broncos hockey team. It was on this day in 2018 that the Broncos team bus and a semi collided at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335, near Tisdale, resulting in 16 deaths and injuring 13 others, all of them occupants of the bus.

The Advance Payments Program is off to a “robust start” according to the Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA), one of the organizations that administers the program. The first cash advances were distributed Tuesday with over $310 million going to more than 1,750 farmers across Western Canada, noted the CCGA. Farmers can apply for up to $1 million in financing with the first $250-thousand interest free and the remaining amount at CCGA’s interest-bearing rate of prime less 0.25 per cent.

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) strongly supports the federal government’s decision to remove the consumer carbon tax, or fuel levy, effective Monday, calling it a “significant victory for Saskatchewan farmers.”The organization has been opposed to the carbon tax since its inception in 2019.

Pulse Canada President Greg Cherewyk and Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Carl Potts are back home after being in China for meetings with customers of Canadian pulses and other products. Canola oil, canola meal, and peas from Canada are subject to a 100 per cent tariff from China, while seafood and pork imports are subject to a 25 per cent tariff.
