Today, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald and Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture Daryl Harrison announced the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) is implementing measures to offer support to producers facing this year's challenging dry conditions. SCIC is implementing the double low yield appraisal process, encouraging acres of low-yielding eligible crops to be diverted to make additional feed available to graze, bale or silage.

Conditions across the province were variable this past week, with some regions receiving limited rainfall and others experiencing heavy storms that brought wind, significant rain and hail resulting in damage to crops, buildings and machinery. Producers continue to assess crops for hail recovery which varies based on the type of crop and its developmental stage. The northwest region received limited rainfall. Areas in the west-central and pockets in other regions received significant rainfall.

The Government of Saskatchewan is reminding farmers and producers that they can salvage hay along provincial highways. "The hay salvage and ditch mowing program provides several benefits for Saskatchewan residents," Highways Minister David Marit said.

SouthwestMuch needed moisture in the southwest region has provided a significant boost to crop development.  Winter cereals are performing well, and fungicide applications on winter wheat have been completed. Spring wheat is generally in the tillering to stem elongation stages, with some early-seeded fields beginning to head. Barley and oats are in the tillering to stem elongation stages. Corn is in the V5 stage.  Canola ranges from the 2 leaf stage to pre-bolting. Flax is currently 10 to 15 cm tall.
