Two days after the fire, the court had on April 29 allowed the two to travel abroad. Their passports were returned to them on May 13. However, they submitted to the court that the passports were returned “wet and torn”.

The prosecution alleged that around 10 am on July 6, 2017, a large mob entered the cabin of the then assistant commissioner of fisheries, Pradeep Vast, in Malvan. They were protesting over issues faced by the fisher community in the district. Rane and the others were arrested after a video showed him purportedly flinging a fish at the official and others hurling abuses. They were granted bail on the same day.
