Siblings Jeremiah and Lily West poured neon orange and yellow powder into ten-gallon jugs. “We're making lemonade and Tang,” Jeremiah said, pouring in more powder. “You need more,” Lily said, stirring the vats with a commercial whisk taller than her torso.

But all face significant budget pressure as they wait on the Alaska Legislature to decide how it may change its per-student funding formula, called the Base Student Allocation. It hasn’t meaningfully increased since 2017, even as inflation has skyrocketed. This year, on March 12, the Alaska State House passed a $1,000 increase to its per-student funding formula.
