Bethel’s Kuskokwim Ice Classic tripod headed downriver and tripped the clock at 4:10 p.m. on May 5, 2025, marking breakup in Bethel. That’s three days earlier than breakup at Bethel last year. The winner of the full Ice Classic jackpot hasn’t been announced yet. But four people from around the region have been named as winners of the Ice Classic’s “Minute Madness” competition, where individuals pay to purchase a minute and win a prize if the tripod falls in their purchased minute.

Ice broke during the 8 a.m. hour on Tuesday, according to the Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center, a branch of the National Weather Service, which monitors river breakups throughout the state. It's a day earlier than Nikolai's average breakup date of April 23.

The Bethel Regional High School cafeteria was a buzz of activity on the Saturday afternoon of the Cama’i festival. Tables were wheeled across the floor and unfolded. Siblings Jeremiah and Lily West poured neon orange and yellow powder into ten-gallon jugs. “We're making lemonade and Tang,” Jeremiah said, pouring in more powder. “You need more,” Lily said, stirring the vats with a commercial whisk taller than her torso.
