With the collapse of Ventnor’s overhang rock fresh in people’s minds (not least because of the help request recently sprayed onto the debris), it’s interesting to be reminded of the 2011 planning application to trim back the overhang and secure the remaining rockface with a structural steel mesh. The application, submitted by the owner of Sea Cliff—the property is adjacent to the rock on Belgrave Road— was withdrawn after almost 50 objections were made.

Overnight, the words HELP have been graffitied onto the large rockfall in Ventnor. It has been six weeks since the iconic overhang rock on Belgrave Road, Ventnor, collapsed onto the carriageway. Residents and businesses in the town have been impacted by the subsequent road closure, whilst the Isle of Wight council has to follow the officials steps to make contact with the owner of the land the rock fell from.

Councillor Chris Jarman, Isle of Wight councillor for Totland and Colwell has said outcome of the Court of Appeal hearing on West Acre Park planning permission for 473 dwellings on the site of Westridge Farm “determined that the planning permission was hence unlawful”.

This week, many Ventnor residents on social media have reported witnessing Island Roads’ operatives riding quadbikes on pavements, driving quadbikes in the wrong direction down a one-way street, and some even reported seeing the quadbikes driven at speed – even though it is illegal to ride quadbikes on pavements in the UK. Their purpose has been to spray weedkiller on vegetation growing on the highway where it meets the pavement (more on this later).

A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Isle of Wight coast. The alert, which was issued at 2.41pm Tuesday 15th April 2025, reads:“Wednesday’s early morning tide at 01:30 on 16/04/2025 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong Southerly Force 5 winds and large waves. “The weather increases tide table values by 0.59 m. The total forecast tide is 4.70 metres Chart Datum (2.11 mAOD) at Cowes.
