Romero Lopez, his son Daniel, and George Elijah Jr., a family friend, were killed at a grocery store on Troy Highway just hours after the issue of deadly gun violence had been raised in a tension-filled city council meeting. A memorial sits outside Tienda Los Hermanos to honor the three lives taken inside the store June 4, 2024, as their families remember and mourn.

It’s important to be able to tell the difference between venomous and nonvenomous snakes. “Venomous snakes, they can cause medical emergencies. The nonvenomous snakes, the worst they can really do is scare you,” says Wesley Anderson, a specialist with the Alabama Extension System.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The Alabama Legislature’s 2025 session has come to a close, and lawmakers worked up until the last minute. Both the House and Senate wrapped around midnight. It was a fight to the finish to get some bills across the line, including the“Back the Blue” bill. It would expand legal immunity for police officers who use excessive force in the line of duty. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Rex Reynolds (R-Huntsville), says it is essential for officer safety.
Gov. Ivey signs bill regulating hemp products in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Governor Ivy signed a bill Wednesday imposing strict regulations on the sale of products containing hemp and THC in Alabama. The law gives the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board the authority to regulate all hemp products, lowering the dosage on edibles and removing hemp products from gas stations across the state. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Andy Whitt says the bill does not legalize marijuana, nor does it completely ban hemp.

The Focus Act, which Governor Ivey voiced support for in her State of the State Address in February, would require students’ phones to be turned off and stored off their person during school hours.
