MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Two families are remembering and mourning the loved ones they lost in a shooting in Montgomery one year ago. Romero Lopez, his son Daniel, and George Elijah Jr., a family friend, were killed at a grocery store on Troy Highway just hours after the issue of deadly gun violence had been raised in a tension-filled city council meeting. A memorial sits outside Tienda Los Hermanos to honor the three lives taken inside the store June 4, 2024, as their families remember and mourn.

She says it can affect them both mentally and physically. The District Attorney’s Office has a program called Open Doors, part of the Helping Families Initiative, that provides trauma therapy and helps children learn to cope.

It’s important to be able to tell the difference between venomous and nonvenomous snakes. “Venomous snakes, they can cause medical emergencies. The nonvenomous snakes, the worst they can really do is scare you,” says Wesley Anderson, a specialist with the Alabama Extension System.

WETUMPKA, Ala. (WSFA) - Makaila Anthony is on a mission one mile at a time. She’s training to run the New York City Marathon in the fall. But she’s not just taking on the race for herself. Anthony is running for the March of Dimes, a nonprofit dedicated to the health of mothers and babies Anthony is a March of Dimes baby. Born three months early, she weighed just two pounds and two ounces. “My mom almost had me on Atlanta Highway! Luckily, she made it to the hospital,” said Anthony.
