MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Nearly five years have passed since Sheriff John “Big John” Williams was shot and killed outside a Lowndes Country gas station. Investigators say William Chase Johnson pulled the trigger. Johnson appeared in a Macon County courtroom for a pretrial conference Wednesday. Last year, the judge granted a change of venue to ensure Johnson gets a fair trial. The judge met with both sides to make sure they are ready for the trial to begin on Oct. 7.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WSFA) - The Department of Justice is making new efforts to crack down on the use of Glock switches. A Glock switch is a device that can convert a semi-automatic pistol into a fully automatic pistol. The device makes handguns capable of firing several rounds in a few seconds. Some officials believe it’s part of the reason homicide rates are up. Law enforcement officers say it converts handguns into machine guns, making those guns deadlier.

That’s how Mitchell “Holt” Elijah, described his father, George Elijah Jr.Holt was in Auburn Tuesday night, preparing for bed when he got the frantic call from his uncle. “He called and says, “Hey, something’s happened. Your dad said he’s been shot and thinks he’s dying,”” Holt explained.
