INTRODUCTION Smoking prevalence is substantially higher in people with psychosis compared with the general population (65% vs. 11.6%; AIHW, 2019; de Leon & Diaz, 2005) contributing to increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and early mortality (Cotton et al., 2022; Dickerson et al., 2014). Explanations for the high prevalence of smoking have included self-medication, causal relationship and shared liability theories (Sharma et al., 2016).
