After a bounce-back series sweep against Missouri, Vanderbilt had another big test against reigning College World Series champions LSU. After dropping the first game 10-6 on Thursday, April 4, the Commodores came alive and won the second two matchups, 8-6 and 13-3. Vanderbilt prevails over Columbia, advances to 64-team NCAA Tournament bracket

With a 64-team NCAA Tournament bracket ticket in the balance, the Commodores bested the Columbia Lions 72-68. Vanderbilt consistently played stout defense, forcing 18 turnovers and a 43% shooting percentage. On the other side of the court, Sacha Washington pulled down 7 offensive rebounds and the team collected 16 assists as a whole. This win is the first NCAA Tournament victory for Vanderbilt since 2013 and moves the Commodores to a 23-9 record on the year.

From 1999 to 2014, Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball made the NCAA Tournament for 15 straight years. Sounds like a foreign idea to a school that hasn’t seen a non-NIT postseason game in men’s or women’s basketball since 2017, but it’s true. Vanderbilt was a consistent powerhouse in the SEC and head coach Shea Ralph has proved that the program can again ascend to that level.

Though Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball’s season isn’t over yet, three Commodores were recognized with All-SEC honors. Graduate Jordyn Cambridge earned an All-SEC defensive team selection, junior Iyana Moore got an All-SEC second-team nod and freshman Khamil Pierre received a bid to the All-SEC freshman team.

After a deflating loss to Dayton where the Commodores saw a 5-1 lead erased by a 7-run eighth inning, head coach Tim Corbin’s side responded with emphasis, beating Eastern Kentucky University 5-3. The effort was led by strong performances from Andrew Dutkanych IV, RJ Austin and Alan Espinal. The game kicked off with a 1-2-3 inning from Vanderbilt starting pitcher Dutkanych IV, and quickly, the Commodore bats got to work. Austin earned a single and advanced with a full-count walk from Jayden Davis.

Perhaps I should stop writing Memorial Minutes. This is just my second of the season but Vanderbilt is 0-5 in the games I’ve had to review, so it’s possible I’m the bad luck. However, unlike its men’s counterpart, I think there’s a lot of hope for the women’s team. Over their four game losing streak, Vanderbilt played four top-50 squads, according to the NCAA’s NET ranking system.
