A sea of black T-shirts adorned with the band’s iconic logo and skeletal mascot Eddie poured into the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for the sold-out Future Past Tour, Iron Maiden’s first visit since 2016. With pandemics and global shutdowns delaying the band’s inevitable return, the passion for the legendary UK rockers was unwavering. Some fans outside the show admitted they’ve seen them more than 150 times, travelling from as far as Brazil and the UK.

It’s probably just as well The Wolfe Brothers aren’t vegetarians. The country music stars are, after all, kicking off their national tour at Beef2024 in Rockhampton, playing at the Schwarten Arena. “No, we’re absolutely not vegetarians,” Tom Wolfe confirms. “So, this is the perfect event to kick off a tour. We have played Rocky heaps over the years. First time was back in 2012. It’s always been a part of Queensland that’s been good to us. Great people up there.

Uzbeck pianist Behzod Abduraimov and Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä came with big reputations, making this the strongest-looking ASO concert this year in terms of artist clout. Greatly impressive, Abduraimov has been here before, in Guy Barrett’s International Piano Series in 2019. A high-profile Decca artist who has switched to the smaller Alpha Classics label, he is an instinctual, impassioned player whose technique is top-notch.

A testament to the weird and wonderful band who never compromised its sound, and whose experimentation and knack for a hook thrust the foursome into the mainstream. With a second sold-out gig at The Gov on Thursday night in support of 12th studio album Rockmaker, the evening had all the hallmarks of a classic rock show of a sort few and far between these days.

Angelique Kidjo’s performances in Australia could be more lively than usual. That’s both a promise and a threat. Anyone who has seen her perform knows what a pocket rocket she is. Just watching her on YouTube is exhausting and to be at one of her concerts could be equally exhausting – or energising, depending on how you look at it. The five-time Grammy Award winner is more energised than usual because she is back in a country she loves.

The last time Pink was at Adelaide Oval the musical landscape was very different. She was playing at the defunct Rumba Festival alongside her pop peers, including Shaggy, Sophie Monk, Selwyn and Bachelor Girl. Meanwhile, an unknown 12-year-old named Taylor Swift was singing the national anthem at an NBA game. A hell of a lot can change in two decades. Those Rumba “peers” she played alongside may have faded into obscurity, while Swift became bigger than The Beatles.

It’s the piece of music that changed my mind about Wagner. And it might change yours, too, if you attend either of the forthcoming concerts by Camerata – Queensland’s chamber orchestra – in Toowoomba and Brisbane. Camerata is known for programming unashamedly beautiful music (why not?) and I was thrilled to see they have included German composer Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll in their forthcoming concert, Camerata & Alex Raineri: Beethoven.

After the furore over the Brisbane Portrait Prize announcing it would accept entries generated by Artificial Intelligence the prize’s board has backtracked somewhat, but that’s not enough for some artists. Brisbane Portrait Prize’s board has said that it would be making changes to entry requirements. “In light of the response from our community over the last few weeks, the board has reconsidered,” its statement reads.

What does one of the world’s biggest rock bands do when they land in Adelaide? They book a studio and rehearse for almost five hours straight. Rather than take in our world-class wine regions or book out an entire restaurant, US rockers Queens of the Stone Age had other plans for Adelaide. A complete overhaul of the band’s more recent setlists gave us an expansive and new look set from its near 30-year career.
