PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — This week’s ‘Hometown Heroes’ have made it their life’s work to bring new opportunities to students in the community who need it most. For nearly 40 years, Virginia and Harvey Kimmel have been creating and supporting cultural arts and education programs for children and teens in South Florida, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Locally, they have supported more than a dozen organizations, including Arts Garage in Delray Beach.

JUPITER, FLA — For many women, battling cancer of the reproductive organs can be a long and lonely journey. Right now, Florida has one of the highest rates of ovarian cancer in the nation. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women. Just this year alone, the American Cancer Society estimates nearly 21,000 women in the United States will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer. And more than 12,000 women will die from the disease.

JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — This week's "Hometown Hero" turned her passion for sewing into a way to bring some comfort to local children during what can be a very uncomfortable time. Margie Conlin sews adorable, life-sized dogs for kids in the community battling life-threatening illnesses and disabilities. She’s teamed up with a local nonprofit so that every time she finishes sewing a batch of the beautiful stuffed animals each one is specially delivered to a child in need.

The nonprofit provides behavioral health, mental health, and care management services for children, adults, seniors, those with special needs, and Holocaust survivors.
