Anytime I hear that families have disowned their loved ones for being queer, usually their children, I cannot understand how they can be so hateful to their own. I recently watched a documentary on Luther Vandross, who was supposedly gay and living his life in the closet. Disclaimer: I do not know Luther and have never heard him say he was gay. But close friends of Vandross have previously said that he was.

Here I am sitting, trying to process the outcome of the election. How can I accept it? How can any of us accept this of the country we thought we lived in? Do I like it? No. Do I accept it? Yes. Do I worry about what is to come? Of course. Am I angry that so many people didn’t care about our rights and what could happen to them when he takes the Oval Office? Abso-fucking-lutely. We did everything we could to win this election, but it just wasn’t our time.

We will continue to support our community in any way we can. That includes supporting our LGBTQ media and events. Does it matter where you live? Yes, it does. Because if you live in New Jersey, you are in one of the top five friendliest LGBTQ states. The highest-ranked LGBTQ states by the Movement Advancement Project are New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Colorado. States named the least LGBTQ-friendly are Arkansas, which was ranked lowest, followed by South Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee, and South Dakota. If you live in those states, it might be time to start thinking about moving.

As I write this on the first day of Women’s History Month, it hits home again that our rights are being stripped away little by little. The silver lining is that women still have reproductive rights in the state of New Jersey, and for that I am grateful. Not that I will ever need an abortion, I just want women to have the ability to be in control of their bodies and their health care. Women are not cattle. Because of the overturn of Roe v.

Instead of being a keyboard vigilante, which never helps anyone, why not try doing something more productive? Bitching and moaning is equivalent to thoughts and prayers. Some people don’t know where to start or are embarrassed to ask for help. With elections coming up, be sure you are registered to vote. If you are registered to vote, you can help other people get registered. Having friends is important to your happiness and they help to check you when you are wrong.

Constant fighting in the world is taking a toll on us all. Last night I went to see Wicked at The Academy of Music. While in line for the bathroom at intermission, there were hundreds waiting. Two little girls were standing behind me with their father. I said to him, “Would you like me to ask people in line if they can go ahead of them?” He said, “Sure.” So I proceed to ask women, “Can these little ones go ahead of you?” Everyone, of course, said yes.
