An unexpected companion named PAL threw the first pitch in the Fireflies matchup Sunday against the Augusta GreenJackets. Short for Palmetto Automated Learning, PAL the robotic dog was part of teaching kids about science, technology, engineering and math at Segra Park.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A trailer full of football equipment stolen from Lakewood High School has parents outraged. They’ve been concerned their kids aren’t practicing safely, and won’t be completely ready for the Friday Night Lights in the fall. “(The) biggest concerns (are) keeping these kids healthy and safe,” said James Love, a parent at Lakewood High School. Parents of Lakewood High School football players say they were blindsided by the loss of the school’s football equipment.

SUMTER, S.C. (WIS) - A cornerstone of local entertainment in the Midlands is preparing to close its doors for a multi-year renovation. The Sumter Opera House, originally opened in 1895 as a movie theater, has not had a large-scale renovation in almost 40 years. The building has weathered many major events such as Hurricane Hugo and the COVID-19 pandemic in its 130 years of operation. Sumter County resident Travis Curry said it’s one of the most important buildings in the town.
