Long Beach City Council is expected to vote on a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Ordinance (MEHKO) on June 10, Health Department officials announced on Wednesday night.

Long Beach youth and seniors presented their hopes for the future at the May 13 City Council meeting, and and suggested specific policy changes to meet those needs. While seniors from the community and the Health Department presented the new Age-Friendly Action Plan, youth were joined by the Office of Youth Development and the Youth Advisory Council gave a four-year update on the Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan.

It was an intergenerational night in the Long Beach Civic Chambers, as youth and seniors envisioned what they need to lead a happy and healthy life, and how the City can help. To represent the city’s senior needs, the Health Department’s Healthy Aging Center presented the Long Beach Age-Friendly Action Plan. This new document is roughly 100 pages and includes 24 goals and 108 action items focused on physical and social health.

In the bright, open space of Bixby Knolls’ Kubo LB, a group of certified yappers and crocheters of all levels gather monthly to create and converse to their heart’s content. Yap & Stitch, a Long Beach fiber arts club for those who take their hobbies with a side of yapping, will celebrate its three-month anniversary this Saturday. Friends have been made, granny squares have been crocheted, and founder and local artist Amor Roldan is ready to expand into more events, and eventually, more locations.

Long Beach’s beloved donation-based printing studio, workshop space and multicultural ecocenter is adding another function to the Wrigley neighborhood building, and the proof is on the walls. Those who enter PLACE Long Beach — likely to make some independent art — will now be greeted by the new Breezeway Gallery. What was once an empty hallway entrance will become a rotating exhibit space, leading into PLACE’s work spaces and complimenting the already existing art.
