An oncology nurse who has worked at Nelson Hospital for more than 25 years says the staffing shortages, run down buildings and lack of bed space is now the worst she's ever seen it. Amanda Field began working at Nelson Hospital as a paediatric nurse in the children's ward in 1999, which she said was in a housed prefab building that was built in the 1960s. An Australian mining company has sought formal permission to mine remote native bushland near Tākaka, despite growing opposition from Golden Bay residents. Siren Gold embarked on its latest round of exploratory drilling at Sams Creek in February, with festival-goers in the Cobb Valley the first to learn of the development after equipment was spotted being flown into the remote valley by helicopter.

More than six weeks after its closure, work is yet to begin on seismic repairs to the Nelson courthouse. The building closed in February after a report found the connection between the original courthouse and an extension added in 2007 was a safety concern, and may be as low as 15 percent of the national building standard. For the safety of users, the ministry decided to vacate while urgent temporary repairs were undertaken.

An independent legal charity is taking court action over what it says is the government's failure to protect the country's rarest dolphins. Environmental Law Initiative has filed for a High Court judicial review over the Hector's and Māui dolphin threat management plan, saying it fails to protect the critically endangered dolphins from being killed by the fishing industry. It said the government needed to be doing more to prevent them from becoming extinct.
