ROODHOUSE - Newly elected Mayor Jim Riley has appointed four new aldermen and a new city clerk after four Roodhouse City Council members and the clerk resigned last month. Among those appointed were two who sought the positions in the April election but were not elected. Riley appointed Gage Giberson and Stephen Speeks to represent Ward 1, William Henline to represent Ward 2 and Earnest Brown to represent Ward 3. The four appointments rounded out the six-person council.

WINCHESTER - A vacant building between Myalyn's Boutique and Pharmacy Plus on the Winchester square may soon be condemned after city officials voted Wednesday to begin the process. The building at 39 S. Main St. once was a doctor's office but had been vacant for many years and has seen many owners. "The last person to occupy the building was Dr. Hynes," Mayor Rex McIntire said.

BEARDSTOWN - The Illinois Department of Transportation has moved on to the second stage of repair work for the Beardstown bridge that crosses the Illinois River. the work has moved to a longer section of the bridge, which the department says will mean longer delays for those waiting to cross. An alternate route has been established for drivers to cross over the river at Meredosia. The department is asking drivers to be patient as the work is completed.

Illinois Department of Agriculture has lifted a temporary suspension of poultry exhibitions and sales. The suspension was put in place because of the threat of the spread of H5N1 avian flu, according to the department. The state took the necessary steps to help limit the spread of avian flu and has been watching the number of cases, Illinois State Veterinarian Mark Ernst said.
