The amount of plastic litter found on beaches in Argyll and Bute has almost trebled in 30 years, a new report has revealed. The GRAB Trust has marked its 25th anniversary by releasing a comprehensive Beach Litter Report for the area. The report is compiled from The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Beachwatch data (1994-2022) and provides a snapshot of the amount and types of litter polluting our beaches.

Sounds of trainers squeaking on polished floors are reminiscent of school PE days. Chatter and laughter in Urdu and Punjabi fill the room. The session is one of three that takes place weekly as part of The Feel Good Women’s Group.

Rural and island communities are facing a housing crisis with second/multiple home ownership, holiday lets and a rise in both rents and mortgages that has resulted in workers being unable to find accommodation. A balance is needed between the importance of catering for the tourism industry and local housing needs. One of the largest employers in the islands and rural areas is the aquaculture sector.

The status of the chair of the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee is in question following comments she made at their previous meeting – which Aberdeenshire Council lawyers deemed unsuitable and to be edited from the published recording. Conservative Cllr Wendy Agnew reduced the November 21 meeting of the Area Committee to a state of consternation and disarray after persisting in a line of comment about a planning application in the face of repeated indications it was inappropriate.

The device will continuously measure tiny changes in the Earth’s magnetic field, reporting this data back to the university for analysis. The device, known as a quantum magnetometer, is a new way of measuring ‘space weather’, the effect of solar storms on the Earth’s magnetic field, which can be thought of as a Northern Lights early warning system. Over the next three years, sensors of this type will be installed across the UK, allowing scientists to obtain a detailed picture of these effects.

More than 200 young people aged between 14 and 26 took part in the research carried out by the OPEN peer research project, which included online surveys, interviews and focus groups. It is a complex issue, but OPEN – led by young people themselves – sought to explore why people under 26 were using alcohol and drugs and not what they were taking.

When you become a mum, you can face challenges that leave you feeling isolated and out of your depth; it can sometimes seem like you have to learn all the milestones of being a new mum by yourself. Diet can be a particularly challenging thing to learn about, especially nowadays when it can be expensive and time-consuming to make nutritious food.
