Every day, Jitender Kumar, in his early 30s, travels from Bahadurgarh city to Otha village in Nuh district, Haryana, 131 kilometres away. Kumar is a Hindi teacher at the Senior Secondary School in Otha, and takes a bus and an auto to reach the children he guides. It’s a hot, humid day in May, just before the school breaks for summer vacation. Kumar rests his head on a plastic chair, under a fan placed inside a 10x12-foot classroom.

A death row convict who killed over 50 people and threw their bodies in a crocodile-infested canal, and facilitated at least 125 illegal kidney transplants, was arrested from Rajasthan after he jumped parole two years ago, a police officer said on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said Devender Kumar Sharma, 67, a resident of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was granted two-month parole on June 9, 2023, but he failed to return and went into hiding.
