This new role started on March 13, and has come about for a number of reasons, primarily the need to ensure that a secure landing space is readily available. Gardner Fire Chief Greg Lagoy said that since Lifeflight acquired a second helicopter several years ago that is housed at Fitchburg Municipal Airport, traffic has been steadily increasing to two or three flights per day.
