As Cabrini University begins its 67th and final academic year, there is an empty feeling around the once bustling campus. A recent Philadelphia Inquirer article noted at least 250 students already transferred to other institutions since news broke of Villanova’s purchase of the property. The noticeable lack of enrollment translated to the college’s athletic programs as well, leaving women’s volleyball, and basketball with canceled schedules for the 2023-2024 athletic season.

Cabrini University’s Greenhouse existed for decades. Yet, it remained untapped and rarely used until just a few years ago. The greenhouse is located between Founders Hall and the parking garage, accessed by a path that connects to the main steps into Founders Hall. Dr. Raymond Ward, director of the Wolfington Center, recalled that before the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020, former Pierce Fellow and Cabrini Alumna, Chardanay White (’20) utilized the greenhouse.

In Philly, it’s a love-hate relationship. When a die-hard fan sees their favorite team winning, it’s all sunshine and rainbows. On the other end of the spectrum, being on the losing end brings out the worst in die-hard fans.

When I was a child, I loved television. My consumption of what was on the screen was part of my daily routine. However, as I got older, I became aware of a glaring issue: there weren’t many characters who looked like me. For the most part, they were all white. I started to cling to whatever Black or darker-skinned characters I could find. I’d even cling to Black contestants on shows like American Idol just to root for someone like me on the screen.
