    Preliminary night one of the fourth annual Miss Volunteer America began on the evening of June 18, with 51 state titleholders competing for the coveted crown and a $50,000 scholarship. Over the next three nights of preliminary competition, each contestant will take the stage at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson, Tenn. to participate in four categories. Each category is worth 25% of contestants' overall score: talent, fitness and wellness, evening gown and a private interview with the judges.

    The Tennessee College of Applied Technology of Jackson was the only school in the state to be awarded $300,000 to fund high-demand workforce initiatives. The grant comes from a collaborative partnership between the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation and Jobs for the Future, a national non-profit, which awarded $6 million to community colleges and technical school nationwide.

    For the first time, the City of Jackson is gearing up to seasonally sell and permit the use of fireworks within city limits, per a recently amended city ordinance. The ordinance concerning the sale and use of fireworks passed unanimously on second reading at the May 6 city council meeting. Sales will begin June 20 through July 5 at any of the 10 authorized fireworks vendors across the city.

    One of thousands nationwide, some areawide constituents attended a "No Kings" protest against President Donald Trump outside of Jackson City Hall on June 14. Hundreds of demonstrators, many of whom traveled from neighboring counties, lined Highland Avenue and Main Street, carrying signs, waving various flags, and shouting chants as cars passing by honked. Indivisible Jackson, a local Democratic activist group, organized the protest and estimated that around 400 people were present.
