The district attorney’s office has touted a six percent decrease in the population of the Harris County Jail, which has for years faced persistent staffing issues and a lingering case backlog — exacerbating what District Attorney Sean Teare has called a humanitarian crisis.

A Houston police officer fired his gun at three men in a stolen vehicle as they were driving toward officers early Friday morning, officials said. Officers responded to a call about an aggravated robbery in northeast Houston just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday after the men allegedly stole a black Ford Mustang, Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Luis Menendez said. Patrol officers were canvassing the area earlier and saw the vehicle parked at Cliff Tuttle Park, 6200 Lyons Ave.

While most Houston residents approve of Mayor John Whitmire’s performance at City Hall, crime and the poor condition of city streets are top concerns, according to a recent survey conducted by the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs. “Our findings suggest the city has its work cut out for it,” Renée Cross, researcher and senior executive director of the Hobby School, said in a statement.

In an attempt to address overcrowding in the Montgomery County Jail, the county will begin doling out thousands of dollars each day to relocate some prisoners. Montgomery County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved a motion that will outsource about 45 prisoners to the Waller County Jail. The move comes at a $75 daily cost for each outsourced prisoner, or $3,375 a day.
