Thanks for being a member of City Paper! Errata non grata: After several months, the Trump administration has brought Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was wrongly deported in March and held at El Salvador’s controversial mega-prison, back to the U.S., where he will face criminal charges. On Friday evening, the 29-year-old appeared in federal court in Nashville, where a grand jury indicted him on counts of illegally smuggling undocumented people.

Thanks for being a member of City Paper! Budget cuts: The Trump administration has leveled another threat against D.C. The president’s proposed 2026 budget for the city seeks to cut funding to the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program, which offers college tuition support to D.C. residents. Thanks for being a member of City Paper! It’s Pride Month and the queer and trans communities are not OK. We’re scared. We’re tired. We’re hoarding prescriptions and contemplating if we can leave the country. We’re packing go bags. We’re working long hours, and we’re losing our jobs. But we also keep going. We’re hosting fundraisers, creating art, protesting, and putting on Pride celebrations—not just in D.C. and other big cities, but in small towns across the country.

Led by the ACLU, the Freedom To Be Monument is the brainchild of Gillian Branstetter, a transgender advocate and communication strategist for the ACLU’s LGBTQ Project.

Thanks for being a member of City Paper! Domestic violence service providers across the city are bracing for a perfect storm. As the Trump administration continues to lay off federal workers and the city government prepares to eke by on a congressionally imposed budget that’s $1 billion short of its 2025 funding needs, advocates believe two issues are likely to collide: an increase in domestic violence and a shortage of funds needed to support local survivors.
