For the first time in school history, Freedom has claimed a WPIAL baseball championship. Despite a mix of emotions, Bulldogs coach Dan O’Leary had one immediate feeling. “Seriously, I feel relief,” he said. “We battled. No one believed in us but us. Our guys stuck together, fought hard and worked hard. We won big games during the year, nothing was said. There wasn’t a word about us the whole year.

Carmichaels faced a daunting challenge in Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 1A championship: Could their offense crack Serra Catholic’s dominant pitching and explosive lineup? The answer came swiftly — and mercilessly — as Serra Catholic senior starter Tyler Skaggs delivered a statement performance, silencing Carmichaels with a no-hitter to seal the title in emphatic fashion. “Pitching a no-hitter in a championship is the kind of thing you dream of as a kid,” Serra Catholic skipper Brian Dzurenda said.

For the second consecutive day, the WPIAL postponed semifinal baseball and softball games because of the weather. The WPIAL moved six baseball and six softball games in Class 3A, 2A and 1A from Thursday to Friday. They were originally scheduled to be played Wednesday but were postponed because of rain. A few of Friday’s games will be played at a different site or time. The changes could have an effect on pitching in baseball because of the pitch count rules.
